I wanted to talk about two wonderful sound machines, the Marpac Dohm and Hushh.
Here is the description of the Hushh from Marpac’s website:
From Marpac, makers of the beloved Dohm-DS All-Natural White Noise Sound Machine, comes Hushh, a portable electronic sound machine designed to help baby fall asleep and stay asleep anywhere. The Hushh cradles your baby in soothing sound to create a comforting, consistent sound environment for sleep. This compact portable unit comes with 3 sound options: choose from bright white noise, deep white noise, or gentle surf and a wide volume range. Hushh is powered by a lithium ion battery and recharges from a micro-usb cord (included). Throughout nighttime or naptime, it masks disruptive noises to promote longer, more restful sleep cycles.
And here is the description of the Dohm:
By helping babies fall and stay asleep, the Dohm from Marpac is mom and dad’s new best friend. Dohm creates the soothing sound of rushing air naturally, without digital loops or recordings. Its unique sound lulls baby to sleep, and its noise-buffering functionality means neighbors outside, parents watching TV, or siblings playing in the next room won’t disturb baby. Adjustable tone and volume make it possible to create the perfect sound environment – especially helpful for the nap and bedtime needs of newborns, toddlers, and children. And the Dohm’s compact size makes it portable, too, so your family’s familiar sleep setting comes along – any time, any place.
Dohm is the Official Sound Conditioner of the National Sleep Foundation, and this product includes a special pediatric Sleep101 guide from the NSF.
I have to admit I have recently gotten back into the habit of falling asleep with the TV on, but now that I am using the Marpac Dohm, I am no longer falling asleep with the TV on. I turn on the sound machine and fall asleep in about ten minutes (We all should take between 10 and 20 minutes to fall asleep). When I wake during the night, I can hear the calming noise, and go back to sleep quickly. (We all wake partially at times during the night when we switch through sleep cycles). My husband was skeptical when I first put the white noise machine in our room, but even he said he is enjoying it! My 8 year old son also slept for a few nights with the Dohm sound machine and he also said he slept great with it.
As for children, I always recommend babies and children sleep with white noise. When babies are first born, they are used to hearing noises in the womb, and complete silence is foreign to them. The calm consistent noise of the Marpac’s sound machines are great to have on when they are sleeping to mimic sounds in the womb. It is not a tinny noise like you may get with some noise machines or white noise apps. There are no loops or pauses in the noise either which is perfect for babies and children.
Many sound machines have sleep timers, but I do not recommend using them. I recommend leaving the machine on throughout the whole sleep time, that way when the baby wakes due to a partial awakening, they hear the familiar noise and can go back to sleep. Marpac’s sound machine does not have a sleep timer, just a simple switch with an Off position and 2 different volume positions. You can move the upper and lower parts of the Dohm to create different sounds, depending on which sound you prefer.
And then, if you travel or just want a sound machine you can bring with you wherever you go, check out the Hushh. Put it on your stroller, bring it to your child’s daycare, or pack it in a diaper bag and you will have comforting white noise for your child, no matter where you go!
